HAGERSTOWN, MD – The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts will present the
Appalachian Wind Quintet in recital on Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 2:30 p.m.
Cinda and Spence Perry and an anonymous donor have sponsored the recital,
which is free and open to the public. Â A reception, hosted by members of the
Museum’s volunteer organization, The Singer Society, will follow the
performance.
Dedicated to presenting woodwind quintet literature from its earliest
beginnings in the classical period to the present time, members, flutist
Barbara Spicher, oboist Ed Stanley, clarinetist Rick Mogensen, bassoonist
Scott Cassada, and French horn player Ed Schupp, have a rich knowledge of
musical styles and vast experience with orchestral and chamber music
repertoire.
Formed in 1987, the group is known for its superb musicianship and
innovative programming and has performed a great variety of concerts in the
Mid-Atlantic region. Â Brief oral program notes throughout the concert give
an enlightening historical context to each composition.
The highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of a commissioned
work by Clear Spring, Maryland composer Dr. Neal Corwell. Â The composition,
Passages, is a single movement work based on the development of two thematic
motives.  The piece has a very “hip†rhythmic drive that will be a great
addition to the woodwind quintet literature. Â Passages is the fifth
commissioned work by the Quintet in an effort to
encourage new literature by regional composers, and is sponsored in part by
the Washington County Arts Council.
Dr. Corwell has spent nine years with the U.S. Army Band in Washington, D.C.
as one of the organization’s featured soloists and seven years as an adjunct
faculty member at Frostburg State University and Shepherd University
teaching low brass and electronic music.
Dedicated to collecting, preserving and interpreting works of art for the
people of Washington County and citizens from the quad-state (MD, PA, VA,
WV) region, for over seventy-eight years, the Washington County Museum of
Fine Arts has been recognized as one of the finest small museums in the
United States. Admission to the museum is free. It is accredited by the
American Association of Museums and its collection includes over 7,000 works
