The recently formed Historic City Park Neighborhoods 1st Group’s first fundraiser ended short of its goal, but group member Heather Holman says members will continue to work to spruce up the park and raise awareness of safety and other issues in their neighborhood.

The group’s fundraiser, which ended this week, brought in about $450, short of the goal of $1,000, Holman said in an e-mail.

The money raised will go toward the group’s goals for the neighborhood around city park and the park itself. Those goals include:

o Improving lighting in alleyways.

o Planting trees in neighborhood in conjunction with the city through a state funded grant.

o Implementing a traffic-calming solution at the intersection of Reynolds and Summit avenues.

o Winning inclusion of Virginia Avenue on a bike path in an effort to reduce speeding and provide a safe route to the park for bicyclists.

o Increasing police presence in City Park

o Improving crossing safety at Park Circle

o Obtaining a decorative welcome sign and street signs

o Reducing speeding on residential streets

Holman said progress has been made on some of the goals.

For instance, she said, the city has installed two new fixtures and trimmed the trees from around the existing lighting in an alley near the park to make the lighting more effective.

At least five houses on or around Summit Avenue received trees through the state grant, she said.

Group members sought a way to slow traffic at the intersection of Summit and Reynolds avenues.

City Engineer Rodney Tissue said Thursday that pavement markings will be placed to constrict the lane on Summit Avenue at Reynolds Avenue, a traffic-calming technique.

He said the Neighborhoods 1st group has proposed adding a concrete circle as a mini-roundabout. It’s possible, but there’s no funding for it now and it would have to go through a city advisory board and the city council, Tissue said.

Tissue said the city staff has recommended removing an old traffic signal at Summit Avenue and Howard Street and putting up stop signs instead. That also would require review by the advisory board and the city council.

A crosswalk with a center median near Park Circle, making it easier to reach the park, is being considered, too, Tissue said.
